All The Feels
Emotional Intelligence is Key to both Personal & Professional Success
"The capacity to be aware of, control and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically." - Oxford Dictionary
Recognizing the emotional experience of others begins by recognizing our own emotional experience. With greater familiarity of our own internal landscape and emotional experiences provides us with the opportunity to develop greater understanding of what others might be experiencing as well. This allows us to foster deeper connections with others through mutual emotional understanding.
Bottom-Up Processing (Feelings-to-Emotions)
Feelings originate in the body in response to an external experience or environmental stimuli. These feelings can appear in different areas of the body and serves as the body's main way of communicating what's transpiring on a more subconscious level.
Top-Down Processing (PFC)
Once we're able to recognize and name the emotional experience we begin to retain greater control over our executive functions. The Prefrontal Cortex (PFC) recognizes the experience and from there, we're able to implement the skills and tools needed to navigate the situation in a constructive way.
As we practice and become more familiar with our emotional responses to situations, we're able to recognize the different emotional patterns that play out in our lives. This then gives us the opportunity to manage and navigate behavioural, cognitive and emotional cycles differently and with greater awareness.
